The classic speed test — but speed isn't faster fingers. Skilled typing is your brain retrieving stored motor "chunks" instead of computing each key (Logan's instance theory). Experts pre-load the next 4–8 keystrokes before striking the current one. When it clicks, your hands run on autopilot and your mind races ahead — that's flow.
Words fall; you intercept them before they land. Your brain doesn't just react — it predicts, pre-loading motor plans to the beat (sensorimotor synchronization). And holding focus across a long run fights the vigilance decrement — the documented drift in attention during sustained effort, first measured by Mackworth in 1948.

Words appear, fade, and must be typed from memory. Forgetting here isn't decay — it's interference from the words that came after (Peterson & Peterson, 1959). And pulling a vanished word back strengthens it more than re-reading ever could — the testing effect (Roediger & Karpicke). ECHO is a controlled interference course for your memory.
Type real words starting with a given letter, against the clock. This is the FAS test — a genuine neuropsychology measure. Experts don't search at random: they work in phonetic clusters ("flip, flock, flow") then switch when one runs dry (Troyer et al.). The gaps between your words (inter-response time) are a precise readout of how fast your mental dictionary serves up results.
The Stroop effect (1935) is one of psychology's most replicated findings — reading is so automatic that seeing "RED" in blue ink makes your brain start reading before you can stop it. PRISM weaponizes it: type only when the color matches, hold fire when it doesn't. That suppression is cognitive braking — your prefrontal cortex overriding a deeply trained reflex.

The raw pace of your mental search — the time between one word and the next (inter-response time). It accounts for over half the variance in fluency scores: being fast between words matters more than which words you pick.

Not how fast — how steady. The consistency of your timing from moment to moment. Speed gets the glory, but low variability is the signature of a skill truly internalized, not just attempted. (Intra-individual variability — Bielak et al., 2010.)
